As Dr. Rowsey writes on iMedExchange:
I am a corneal transplant surgeon in Florida and past Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of South Florida. I am currently working with United States Senator Tom Coburn, MD, who has a high risk OB-GYN practice in Muskogeee, Oklahoma. He flies home on the weekend to deliver babies, and is a full time US Senator during the week. He was so distraught with the poor representation of health care, and physicians by Congress and the Senate that he ran for the House, three terms, and now is a first term Senator.
He has asked me to share his Senate bill 1099 with physicians, the state medical societies, local medical societies and subspecialty societies to awaken the physicians to the need for their active participation in the legislative process. Physicians need to teach their patients about health care reform, but can only do so if they are knowledgeable and active, both at the state and national level....
[Senator Coburn's] legislation addresses health IT, EMR, a Tax Credit for a Patient Driven Health Care System, HSAs, rewarding personal responsibility for healthy lifestyles, Medicaid restructuring, and tort reform with state Health Care Courts. All of these measures are the denouement of AMA aspirations to excellence in healthcare reform. We need your Senators as vocal advocates.
We hope all of our physician readers will join the conversation in the VitalSigns Resource Center on iMedExchange.
